Hami Melon

Bought a Hami melon from the supermarket today. What is Hami Melon? Hami Melon is a green football shaped fruit that has the texture and taste of a Texas cantaloupe. But its significant is not as a fruit but as a token of acient Chinese economic infrastructure. Hami is located southwest of Mongolia and north of Tibet in the Gobi desert. It’s aprroximately 1200 miles away from Beijing. During the Tang dynasty, Hami was a small trading post among the silk route. To support it’s local population, its people developed an irrigation system using underground water. One of its produce was this green melon.

During one of his visit to the capitol, the King of Hami brought along one fo these melon with him to please the emperor. The emperor liked it so much that fresh melons are delievered everyday from Hami to Peking on horse back, served on ice collected from the frozen ponds in Harbin. It is a testimony on Chinese’s logistic system more than 1500 years ago.
